If your leisure battery is not performing as expected, there are a few common signs that may indicate a fault or that the battery has reached the end of its lifespan.
Common Signs of a Faulty Battery
- The battery does not hold charge and drains quickly after being fully charged
- Appliances stop working sooner than expected when running on battery power
- The battery will not charge fully or the voltage drops quickly after charging
- The battery appears swollen, damaged, leaking or omitting a smell. (lead-acid batteries)
Things to Check First
Before replacing the battery, it’s worth checking a few other things that can cause similar symptoms:
- Ensure the battery is being charged correctly from mains, solar, or the vehicle alternator
- Check for blown fuses, loose connections, or damaged wiring
- Confirm that high-power appliances are not draining the battery faster than expected
- Check the battery age, as many lead-acid batteries last around 3–6 years depending on use
When Replacement May Be Needed
If the battery still fails to hold charge after being fully charged and the rest of the system has been checked, it may have reached the end of its service life and require replacement.
