A leisure battery is a rechargeable battery designed to provide a steady supply of power to 12V appliances in campervans, caravans and motorhomes when mains electricity is not available.
Leisure batteries power onboard equipment such as lighting, water pumps, fridges and other appliances while you are travelling or staying off-grid.
Unlike vehicle starter batteries, which deliver a short burst of high current to start an engine, leisure batteries are designed to deliver power steadily over longer periods and to be repeatedly discharged and recharged.
There are four main types of leisure battery:
- Wet Lead Acid
- AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)
- Gel
- Lithium (LiFePO4)
Each type has different characteristics in terms of capacity, lifespan, charging requirements and cost. The right choice will depend on your electrical setup, how much power you use, and how long you typically spend off-grid.
