A built-in compressor fridge is the practical choice for most permanent campervan and motorhome builds. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, from compact units that slot neatly under a worktop in a smaller van, to larger fridge-freezer combinations for bigger builds or extended trips. That range makes them suitable across pretty much any build, whether it is a compact weekend van or a full-size motorhome.
Compressor fridges run on 12v or 24v DC and are highly efficient on a DC system. They handle hotter climates well and perform consistently regardless of the ambient temperature outside. Unlike absorption fridges, they do not require external ventilation through the vehicle bodywork — airflow is managed through vents within the cabinetry itself, which gives you more flexibility with placement and furniture layout.
Key things to know:
- Available in a wide range of sizes to suit any build
- Runs on 12v or 24v DC — highly efficient on a DC system
- No external ventilation required — cabinetry vents handle airflow internally
- Handles hotter climates well
- A modest DC setup is enough for weekend off-grid use
- For longer off-grid trips, invest in your DC system — battery banks, solar, and DC-DC charging
To put the off-grid capability in context: a well-sized DC system running a compressor fridge can rival the time you would get from an absorption fridge on a single gas cylinder. Both are capable off-grid options, but they rely on very different things to get there.
Most units also have a 230v connection, switching automatically to mains when hookup is available and saving the battery for when it is needed.
