A DC-DC charger (also known as a Battery-to-Battery or B2B charger) sits between your starter battery and leisure battery. Its job is to take power from the alternator and convert it into the correct, safe charge for your leisure battery.
It’s compatible with all vehicles and battery types, including modern vehicles with smart alternators and leisure batteries such as AGM, Gel, and Lithium, unlike traditional split charge relays.
It works in three key ways:
- Detection: The charger monitors the starter battery voltage and only activates when the engine is running, ensuring it never drains your starter battery while parked.
- Voltage Transformation: Alternator power can vary, so a DC-DC charger stabilises it and ensures your battery receives the right voltage.
- Multi-Stage Charging: Power is delivered in controlled stages for safe and efficient charging:
- Bulk: Fast charging up to around 80%
- Absorption: Brings the battery up to full charge
- Float: Maintains charge without overcharging
